Luis Lacalle Pou Received the “Tax Personality of the Year” Award

The 1841 Foundation officially presented its new and innovative initiative: the “Tax Personality of the Year” Award, created to highlight leaders who, through their management or influence, contribute significantly to the promotion of individual freedom, privacy, private property, and competition among jurisdictions.

In this first edition, the recognition was awarded to the former President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, for his contribution to consolidating a competitive tax environment aligned with the values that inspire this distinction.

Why Lacalle Pou Was Chosen as Tax Personality of the Year

Among the reasons that justified granting this award, one of the most notable was the way former President Lacalle Pou managed the Covid-19 pandemic and the changes his administration introduced to Uruguay’s existing “tax holiday” regime. These reforms undoubtedly positioned the country as a more competitive tax option than others (including Portugal, Spain, and Italy) without generating international sanctions.

These measures led many entrepreneurs and professionals to relocate to Uruguay. They not only invested, hired workers, acquired goods and services, and paid taxes in the country, but, several years later, many of them continue to do so.
